Tonga Report - 2007

The twenty-fourth Annual Clubfoot Visit to Tonga occurred from 1 to 5 November 2007. The team included Leonard Kuo, Michael Solomon and Andrew Leicester as surgeons. Hugh Seaton was the anaesthetist and April Sutcliffe was the physiotherapist. Trudi Beck, a medical student came with us for a second time. Andrew Kuo and Olivia Leicester also attended as student observers and were able to help with the physiotherapy and plastering.

We treated 21 children with talipes equinovarus. There were 12 males and 9 females. The average Pirani score was 4.9. Most cases were treated with posteromedial release. Three percutaneous Achilles' tenotomies were performed. One child of 2 weeks of age was deferred until next year due to the risks of anaesthetic. One child was also deferred due to severe scabies skin infection. There was one patient aged 6 who had severe deformity with large calluses due to walking on the lateral borders of his feet. There was another patient who required revision surgery following posteromedial release 12 months ago.

The new operating theatres at Vaiola Hospital continue to function very well. We would like to thank Zimmer for donating a small fragment set and a large fragment set to Vaiola Hospital. Our project for the next 12 months is to try and organise an image intensifier for the hospital. Geoff Rosenberg and Mark Ridhalgh visited with a team in May and are due to visit again next week. We were interested to visit Nuku ‘Alofa, particularly after the political unrest in October 2006. A number of buildings in the town centre had been destroyed in the unrest and are due to be reconstructed. There is an increasing move to democracy within the country.

We would like to thank all the people involved with helping us, particularly the nursing staff at Vaiola Hospital and the general surgeon, Samson Mesol. Our visit was coordinated by Sulia who looked after us very well. Special thanks to Sefo who is now in his thirtieth year of helping with the babies with talipes. We are also very grateful to Trudi Beck who single-handedly raised $8,000 with a fund raising function in Goulburn for the Clubfoot Programme.

We are planning another trip in 12 months' time.
